High School Academics / Curriculum : English Ninth Grade EnglishNinth Grade English is designed for college preparatory students, and
will build higher-order, critical thinking skills through a strong emphasis
on writing. The analysis of a broad range of literary genres, both in
anthology and full-length novel formats, will serve as support and context
for a variety of writing tasks. Students will develop analytical methodology
and critical reading, thinking, listening, and writing skills through
reading, class discussions, lectures, note taking, research, and the writing
process. Work with vocabulary building, syntax, grammar, and language
mechanics will be for the purpose of creating a solid foundation for clear,
effective, and purposeful writing. Ninth Grade Honors EnglishThis class builds on the foundations of the Middle School language arts
program. The curriculum seeks to foster an appreciation of literature
as well as the skills associated with close reading, modes of writing,
word usage, vocabulary development, listening, speaking, and analysis.
This class demands more writing and reading than the regular ninth grade
English class and moves at a faster pace. In order to be considered for
this class, students must have a recommendation from the eighth grade
teacher and have graduated from middle school with a B average or better. Tenth Grade EnglishThis class builds on the foundations of the ninth grade language arts
program. Students in this class learn world literature from a wide variety
of authors and genres. They will also gain new perspectives along with
a respect for diversity and for multicultural traditions and beliefs as
they critically evaluate and respond to literary selections. Tenth Grade Honors EnglishThis course mirrors the tenth grade English world literature curriculum
with the exception of the amount of writing that is required and the amount
and difficulty level of the reading required. The literary selections
in this course provide complex plot analysis, and a challenging level
of vocabulary. In order to be considered for placement in this class,
students would have left ninth grade English with a B average and be recommended
by the ninth grade teacher. Eleventh Grade American LiteratureEleventh Grade American Literature is designed for college preparatory
students, and will continue to build higher-order, critical thinking skills
through a strong emphasis on writing. The analysis of a broad range of
literary genres within the body of American Literature, both in anthology
and full-length novel formats, will serve as support and context for a
variety of writing tasks. Students will survey and analyze American Literature
within the framework of America's shifting social, political, and cultural
landscapes (17th-21st centuries). Students will develop analytical methodology
and critical reading, thinking, listening, and writing skills through
reading, class discussions, lectures, note taking, research, and the writing
process. Continuing work with vocabulary building, syntax, grammar, and
language mechanics will be for the purpose of reinforcing clear, effective,
and purposeful writing. Twelfth Grade British LiteratureTwelfth Grade British Literature is designed to aid college preparatory
students in establishing well-developed, mature proficiency in the areas
of critical thinking, vocabulary usage, literary experience and knowledge,
research skills, and written and oral communication. Higher-order, critical
thinking skills will continue to be developed through a strong emphasis
on writing. The analysis of a broad range of literary genres within the
body of British Literature, both in anthology and full-length novel formats,
will serve as support and context for a variety of writing tasks. Students
will survey and analyze British Literature in the context of England's
historical and cultural panorama (5th-21st centuries), with attention
to the connections between that country's changing social structures and
the evolution of its literary works. Students will continue to develop
and refine analytical methodology, as well as critical reading, thinking,
listening, and writing skills through reading, class discussions, lectures,
note taking, research, and the writing process. Continuing work with vocabulary
building, syntax, grammar, and language mechanics will be for the purpose
of reinforcing clear, effective, and purposeful writing. AP LiteratureAn AP English Literature and Composition course engages students in the
careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through
the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding
of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure
for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure,
style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of
figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. The course includes
intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods.
The pieces chosen invite and reward rereading and do not, like ephemeral
works in such popular genres as detective or romance fiction, yield all
(or nearly all) of their pleasures of thought and feeling the first time
through. The AP English Literature Development Committee agrees with Henry
David Thoreau that it is wisest to read the best books first; the committee
also believes that such reading should be accompanied by thoughtful discussion
and writing about those books in the company of one’s fellow students. AP English Language and Composition This course will have a strong emphasis on composition, reading American
Literature, literary analysis, and most importantly, critical thinking.
As a college course, the purpose will be to enable students to read complex
texts with understanding and to write prose of sufficient richness and
complexity to communicate effectively with mature readers. Writing will
take place in a variety of forms: narrative, expository, analytical, and
argumentative. Due to the demands of this class, students must be recommended
by their tenth grade teacher and have consistently shown an ability to
work effectively and efficiently while maintaining a B plus or better
GPA over the course of their high school years. Textbook Information For textbook information, please click here to visit our textbook provider.
