My name is Shawn Ruiz, and I am excited to be joining the Kindergarten team this Fall. I was born and raised in Southern California. My journey as a believer in Christ began at the young age of 6. I have vivid memories of the moment I asked Jesus into my heart. In high school I went on a missions trip to South America for three weeks, and afterwards became very active in my church youth group. In between my junior and senior year of high school, I made the decision that I wanted to attend Heritage Christian High School. The only way to make this financially happen was to get a job and pay for it myself. So, Christian education holds a very special place in my heart. Attending that Christian high school my senior year became the springboard for me attending a Christian University. During my college years, I lead a drama team, traveled across the country on a camp team, served as a Resident Assistant in the dorms, and worked at a Christian summer camp where I met my husband who I love dearly. I have four wonderful children who will be joining the Maranatha family this fall. My journey continues today serving the Lord wherever He places me. I am blessed to be able to serve with you at Maranatha Christian School. I love teaching and consider it a privilege to work with children every day!
Professionally speaking, I graduated from Vanguard University with a BA, a California teaching credential, and a MA in Education. I have taught 6 years in California public schools, and 9 years in private Christian schools. During my time in the classroom I have taught: 5th grade GATE, 3 rd grade, 4th grade, and Kindergarten.
In addition to teaching K-6 art for a total of 6 years, I was also an adjunct college instructor for 3 years in the teaching credential program at Emmaus Bible College. In my years as a teacher, I have been a Master/Mentor Teacher, School Wide Test Coordinator, and a Support Provider for the Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment project with the University of California Irvine. I have participated in the SUMS project with my California school district (Students Using Mathematics Successfully.) I was hired by my school district in California to redesign the school library to promote literacy, and have always been actively involved in each school that God has placed me in. My heart is to be a lifelong learner, and continue to grow every year professionally. I have had the opportunity to attend Kindergarten conferences for the past three summers, which has always challenged me to pour into my classroom in new ways. Having taught in both public and private schools, I must say that hands down I love working at a Christian school where God’s word can be poured into the lives of the student’s daily. “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
